چکیده

The impact of FUSE upon the fundamental parameters of OB stars and Wolf-Rayet stars is reviewed. The stellar wind signatures available in the far-UV provide us with important additional diagnostics of effective temperature. Together with improved non-LTE stellar atmosphere models allowing for line blanketing and stellar winds, this has led to a downward revision in the spectral type-temperature calibration for O stars versus Vacca et al. (1996) In addition, the Lyman continuum ionizing fluxes from O dwarfs are compared with previous calibrations of Panagia (1973) and Vacca et al. We also discuss massloss rates in OB stars, such that agreement between recent theoretical predictions (Vink et al. 2000, 2001) and observations of O supergiants is possible, solely if winds are clumped in the far-UV and Hα line forming regions, as favoured by line profile comparisons for Pv 1118-28 (early to mid O) or S iv 1062-1073 (late O to early B) in FUSE datasets. In contrast, B supergiant wind strengths are predicted to be much higher than observations indicates, especially if their winds are also clumped. Finally, significant upward revisions in wind velocities of very late WN stars are indicated by N ii 1085 resonance line observations, plus elemental abundances in OB and WR stars are briefly discussed.

Fundamental Parameters of Massive Stars

We discuss the determination of fundamental parameters of ‘normal’ hot, massive OB-type stars, namely temperatures, luminosities, masses, gravities and surface abundances. We also present methods used to derive properties of stellar winds – mass-loss rates and wind velocities from early-type stars.

Hot Massive Stars: The Impact of HST

We review the contribution of Hubble Space Telescope to the study of hot, luminous stars. Optical and IR imaging have permitted spatially resolved observations of young, massive clusters within Local Group galaxies, such as R136, NGC 3603 and Arches, revealing unprecedented concentrations of very massive O stars. UV spectroscopy of field OB stars in the Magellanic Clouds have provided suitable ...

Spectrophotometry of Massive Star Forming Regions with Gtc

In these latest years, the detection of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in Giant HII Regions (GHRs) has yielded several questions about our current understanding of massive stars evolution and hot expanding atmospheres, the age of the ionizing populations and their impact onto the physical properties of GHRs. Here, we present spectrophotometric observations of 4 extragalactic GHRs which show WR features ...

Turbulence and magnetic spots at the surface of hot massive stars

Hot luminous stars show a variety of phenomena in their photospheres and in their winds which still lack clear physical explanations at this time. Among these phenomena are non-thermal line broadening, line profile variability (LPVs), discrete absorption components (DACs), wind clumping and stochastically excited pulsations. Cantiello et al. (2009) argued that a convection zone close to the sur...

Where are the hot ion lines in classical T Tauri stars formed ?

Where are the hot ion lines in classical T Tauri stars formed ? ABSTRACT Context. Classical T Tauri stars (hereafter CTTS) show a plethora of in-and outflow signatures in a variety of wavelength bands. Aims. In order to constrain gas velocities and temperatures, we analyse the emission in the hot ion lines. Methods. We use all available archival FUSE spectra of CTTS to measure the widths, fluxe...
